What is massage therapy at Active Edge?

At Active Edge Chiropractic & Functional Medicine, we use a combination of hands-on, advanced soft tissue massage techniques to address the root of our patients’ soft tissue injuries. By manipulating muscles and tissues, we can restore function, promote relaxation, alleviate tension, and enhance overall physical and mental health.

As part of our approach to holistic well-being, we’ll adjust the types of massage therapies to each individual’s needs and align it with your overall health goals.

Encourage Balanced Musculature

Traditional massage techniques help you heal by bringing blood flow and nutrients to the injured area while driving out toxins. We take it to the next level by utilizing active massage techniques that help your body recognize where and how to properly organize new tissue and fasica as it heals. This is not your average massage. This is not your average massage in Columbus, Ohio.

The right massage when you need it

It shouldn’t be your job to know what type of massage you need on any given day. Your massage therapist’s expertise and experience will guide your session when you come into our office. If you need more relaxation, your therapist might use essential oils or give a hot stone massage. If you have a nasty knot, you might get a combination of deep tissue, vibration, and stretching in that area. Our massage appointments are charged based on time, not the techniques or products used, but can include these types of massages:

  • chiropractic massage
  • sports massage
  • medical massage
  • myofascial massage
  • trigger point massage
  • swedish massage
  • deep tissue massage
  • reflexology massage
  • cranial sacral massage
  • cupping massage

Auricular Therapy

The ear is a microsystem of the entire body, mapped with over 200 points, corresponding not only to specific body parts and systems, but for physical pain to emotional imbalances as well.  Auricular Therapy stimulates specific points on the external ear through acupressure to produce therapeutic affect elsewhere in the body.

Auricular Therapy, is also known as “Ear Seeding.” Tiny 2mm actual plant seeds or pellets are pressed on the appropriate corresponding point with medical adhesive tape or clear patches to stimulate nerve branches in the ear. A connection is made to the brain and nervous system bringing homeostasis (balance) to that system or body part.  It is a non-invasive and drug-free alternative for many different conditions such as headache, back pain, insomnia, allergies, hormone imbalances, digestive issues, weight loss, smoking cessation, and so much more.

A typical initial Auricular Therapy visit includes an in-depth patient history of current and past conditions and concerns.  The practitioner then does an exam of the ears noting auricular signs, checking for areas of tenderness, and clarifies findings with the patient.  Together they discuss and prioritize these findings to create a treatment plan which can range from 1 or 2 weeks up to several months.

The ears are cleaned, and the seeds are placed, remaining up to 5 days before being removed and allowing 2 days for the ears to rest before the next treatment is applied.  The patient can shower and engage in normal activity and will press on them throughout the day as directed to stimulate the acupressure effect of the seeds. To remove, simply just peel them off.

Generally, ear seeds are not painful and have no side effects, however, in some cases, they can be tender. This along with redness or warmth at the site is a sign that they are active, and the body is responding to the stimulation.  The practitioner will give specific instructions on how to handle these situations.

What Our Patients Are Saying

Frequently Asked Question

Our massages are between 60 and 90 minutes. Recommendations for massage duration and frequency are dependent on whether it is full body or more targeted, your concerns, and more.

Massage releases many toxins that have been built up in your body. If you feel sick after a massage it likely indicates dehydration, toxic load, or dormant infection. If your body doesn’t have enough water get rid of the toxins, meaning you are dehydrated, simply drinking watercan make you feel better.  We also recommend that you boosting immune support supplements and consider scheduling a functional med visit to assess areas of your detoxification system that may need support.

Lactic and Uric acid are the two most common toxins released after a massage. Lactic acid is produced when you break down sugar while uric acid is produced when you break down purines. Both have to do with energy production inside the body.

Stimulating your muscles causes blood to flow to the muscles causing temporary inflammation and soreness as part of the building and repair process. Depending on depth of pressure and techniques used, some bruisingcan even be normal. Generally speaking, soreness is a good sign, indicating that the massage therapist efficiently found and released restrictions, adhesions, knots, and other tightness from your muscles and fascia. Anydiscomfort should only last a few hours up to a few days, but if it lasts longer, let us know.

Most insurances do not accept massage as a treatment they will cover because it is considered an alternative treatment. If your insurance accepts massage, at minimum you typically need to have a referral from your primary care doctor to get it covered.

Your journey begins with your Discovery Evaluation. This first visit includes your exam which works to uncover the root of your issue(s), new patient diagnostics, and, of course, your first treatment.
