Chronic Disease

Chronic diseases are conditions that are long-term and which cannot be cured by medication or surgery. Traditional medical practice has no cure for chronic disease and is focused on acute disease treatment rather than holistic treatment. Oftentimes with chronic disease, multiple body systems are involved and are therefore in need of full-body attention for proper healing. A functional medicine approach from  integrative wellness practitioners can help you get the holistic care you need to improve your chronic disease.

What is Chronic Disease?

Chronic disease is a vague term that refers to a long-lasting medical condition which impairs or limits daily life activities. Chronic disease can look very different among individuals and vary across bodily systems with a variety of symptoms. It’s stated that chronic diseases “cannot be cured by medication” but can be “controlled” and severity of symptoms can be reduced.

What causes chronic disease?

There are many causes of chronic diseases that are often rooted in environment and lifestyle. A few of these chronic disease factors include:

  • Poor diet
  • Nutrient deficiency
  • Chronic stress (physical, chemical, or emotional)
  • Immune dysfunction
  • Hormone imbalance
  • Gut dysfunction
  • Acidity & Inflammation
  • Infection
  • Poor movement
  • Smoking or tobacco use

If any of these factors resonate with your health or lifestyle, there is good news: making adjustments can improve your chronic disease! At Active Edge, our chronic disease specialists will work with you to identify the key factors in your chronic disease and curate a plan to eliminate them one step at a time.

What are the types of chronic diseases?

Chronic diseases are found throughout the body and are not specific to one organ or another. As stated by the CDC, the most common chronic diseases are:

  • heart disease – coronary heart disease (CAD), stroke, peripheral arterial disease, or aortic disease
  • Cancer – skin, lung, breast, prostate, colorectal, kidney, and more.
  • Diabetes – Type 1 and Type 2 (link to diabetes page)
  • Chronic lung/respiratory diseases – chronic obstructive pulmonary(COPD), asthma, occupational lung diseases
  • Chronic kidney (renal) disease (CKD)
  • chronic liver disease
  • Alzheimer’s

While most chronic diseases are typically related to aging adults, they are unfortunately becoming more and more common in young people who can also experience chronic diseases. The most common chronic diseases in young adults (500/mo) include obesity, depression, and high blood pressure but others such as heart disease and cancers are rising.

Taking a total body approach to chronic diseases is essential for preventing and reversing these disease processes.  Fortunately our lifestyles are vastly responsible for these chronic diseases above.  Our chronic disease doctors (20/mo) can help address your lifesyles through physical care lifestyle education and stress reduction to provide you with a holistic treatment that will drastically improve your condition.

Natural Remedies for Chronic Disease

The Western medical approach to treating chronic disease is to “manage” the problems that cannot be “cured.” Western medicine and likeminded practices fall short because they are so focused and segmented in their approach to diagnosis and treatment. Specialists often look only at the organ(s) they are responsible for and do not look at the body as a whole system.

At Active Edge, we recognize the importance of interconnective and holistic care for chronic disease resolution. Activating your body’s natural healing potential may include:

Stage 1: Discover Root Cause

You are your own person, with your own collection of life events which brought you to where you are today. You deserve to be heard, seen, and treated as the individual you are. Your journey begins with your Discovery Evaluation. This first visit includes your exam which works to uncover the root of your issue(s), new patient diagnostics, and, of course, your first treatment. This is how we will help you begin connecting the dots and feeling better. After your first treatment, we will ask you to observe your body’s responses– good, bad, or indifferent. There is no wrong answer as this is just starting point information and direction for moving forward. In your second visit, we will review this feedback and your diagnostics to further identify potential underlying causes and compensations. We will combine everything we have learned about you, consider your goals, and together create a plan to resolve your concerns from the roots up
