"Normal" body aches aren't normal

Many people suffer from what they call their “normal” aches like, neck pain, back ache, body aches and headaches, etc… They take a couple of over the counter medicines and muscle through it. Though we commend your tough attitude, this method will yield little more than temporary relief and have potentially dangerous side effects. We encourage you to instead seek alternative treatment to alleviate your pain rather than simply masking it.

Those “normal” aches and pains you have been experiencing all those years and accepted to be your reality are not normal, and you do not have to live with them. Body aches may have roots in physical, physiological, or a combination of factors. By getting to the root of your problem and giving you the right tools, your body can restore balance and heal so the issues can truly be resolved.

What are Body Aches?

If you experience regular body aches in the form of headache, neck pain, back pain, limb pain, weakness, fatigue, or temperature changes, your body is telling you something is wrong. These symptoms are a result of an underlying condition that your body has tried to fix and compensate for on its own. Once you have started feeling pain, your body has reached the threshold point where it can no longer compensate, and it is a clear sign that it needs attention.

What causes body aches?

There are a number of possible causes to your specific body aches including:

  • Environmental factors
  • diet
  • Overexertion exercising or other strenuous activities
  • Viral infections
  • Trauma or injury
  • Movement pattern imbalances

When your body is moved or forced in an improper direction, surrounding or even far away muscles will compensate to help you move better. This is especially true after injury when modified compensation patterns develop that are beneficial to help you heal in the short term, but do not serve you well long term.

After an unknown amount of time of incorrect compensation, your body starts to get fatigued because of incorrect muscles firing during specific movements and this will eventually result in recurring or constant body aches which can be more localized to specific body parts or widespread, whole body aches (more commonly associated to flu or cold).

Here at Active Edge, our practitioners can help you find the root cause of your problem. With custom body ache programs, we will not just provide you with temporary relief, but treat the issue at its core – revitalizing your entire body.

Natural remedies for body aches

Typically, body aches and pains are managed by taking analgesics (painkillers) or over the counter medications. However, this method of treatment really only puts a bandaid on the real issue.

At Active Edge, our physicians will create a care plan that will address the causes of your aches and pains. We will consider the musculoskeletal component as well as any underlying endocrine, visceral, hormonal, or nutritional imbalances contributing to your pain.

To address movement pattern imbalance, it is necessary to activate muscles that aren’t working hard enough and inactivate muscles that are working too hard. We can do this through specialized chiropractic approaches as well as exercise therapy and movement retraining.

By utilizing a dynamic regimen, we have helped many patients find relief from what they consider their “everyday aches and pains.”

Our Doctors' Credentials and Education

As Doctors of Chiropractic, our education is based on the foundation that our bodies are intelligent and interconnected. Our curriculum includes more nutrition education than medical doctors and some of the most in-depth training in anatomy, microbiology, diagnosis, and vertebral subluxations. We recognize the importance of all systems functioning well together, focus on prevention, and continue to refine our knowledge to heal problems from the inside out.

With studies under some of the Functional Medicine greats including Bob Rakowski, Jeffery Bland, Mark Hyman, and Jeff Bryst, our doctors have spent countless hours enhancing their coaching techniques, studying bioavailable diagnostic tests (blood, hair, skin, nails ), and gaining in depth knowledge of supplements, tinctures, essential oils.

We apply both functional medicine and physical techniques to enhance neurological communication and help patients’ bodies heal their aches and pains. We also recognize emotions can cause physical pain and utilize other tools to help shift the frequency of cell vibration to higher, more healing frequencies.

A variety of the techniques we use include:

  • Thompson Drop, Logan Basic, Webster
  • Cranio-sacral, Nasal Release, Anterior lumbar
  • Applied Kinesiology, Rock Tape, Neuromuscular Therapy, Scar tissue release

Our wide range of knowledge helps us see the whole body picture and provide the most comprehensive care to find the root of dysfunctions of your body aches. Patient’s often feel positive improvements in pain reduction, increased range of motion, enhanced energy, and more, as they implement the tools they need for healing naturally and holistically.

What Our Patients Are Saying

Waking up in pain could be caused by your sleeping position and how that affects your spine. Sleeping on your stomach often causes pain in the morning or if your spine is twisted or flexed in an unusual position, this can cause aches and pain as well.

Depending on how hard or soft your mattress is, there can be misalignment with your spine throughout the night making you feel sore when you wake up. You may also think about getting a different pillow or sleeping with a pillow between your legs when laying on your side to correct your spine alignment.

Hydration and nutrient status can cause body aches upon waking as well.  Making sure to stay properly hydrated with water and electrolytes as well as eating a well rounded clean diet are very important to recovery.

Lastly, if you are waking up frequently, disrupted sleep can cause inflammation and body aches.

Most people aren’t paying attention to their posture before they sneeze, but if you are in an unusual position and then you sneeze, the sudden reflex movement after a sneeze can cause over stretching of muscles, or may cause flare ups from a previous injury like a herniated disc or sciatic nerve. The sneeze itself is NOT the cause of the injury.

During a storm, the air pressure, humidity, and temperature are all changing from what you normally experience on a regular day. Most of the time you should not be able to consciously perceive the barometric pressure changes.  However, if you do it is usually caused by excess inflammation in your body.  It is very common for inflammation to settle in your joints and soft tissues, potentially causing body aches or joint pain.

Allergies can cause coughing, itchy eyes, and congestion, but repeatedly coughing or sneezing can also trigger other inflammatory responses from your body trying to fight the allergens. General inflammation can cause body aches, especially in your chest and lung area because of the allergic responses. If the pain is sharp and worsens, be sure to talk to your doctor to make sure there aren’t any other underlying issues.

Food poisoning is an infection in which your body releases white blood cells, cytokines, and other substances to fight infections. This can cause inflammation and muscle aches with widened blood vessels.

Alcohol can cause dehydration, electrolyte and balance, inflammation, in addition to the other substances (some toxic) that are broken down as a result of drinking alcohol. Dehydration and inflammation can cause body aches and addition to headaches that are common during a hangover.

Stage 1: Discover Root Cause

You are your own person, with your own collection of life events which brought you to where you are today. You deserve to be heard, seen, and treated as the individual you are. Your journey begins with your Discovery Evaluation. This first visit includes your exam which works to uncover the root of your issue(s), new patient diagnostics, and, of course, your first treatment. This is how we will help you begin connecting the dots and feeling better. After your first treatment, we will ask you to observe your body’s responses– good, bad, or indifferent. There is no wrong answer as this is just starting point information and direction for moving forward. In your second visit, we will review this feedback and your diagnostics to further identify potential underlying causes and compensations. We will combine everything we have learned about you, consider your goals, and together create a plan to resolve your concerns from the roots up
